“Rivers of Living Water Flowing from Within”John 7:38
Beloved of God:
Imagine a rain forest where it never rains, but where all manner of vegetation flourishes, and countless species of animals thrive; not because water falls down from the sky, but because water continuously flows up from the earth. This is the picture of how the Bible describes the Garden of Eden. Before rain ever fell upon the earth, God watered the surface of the earth from underground reserves which Genesis 2:6 says “came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.”
In 2014, scientists discovered great reserves of water, three times the volume of water found within the earth’s oceans, contained within rocks deep within the earth’s core. This water from underground rocks, long before there was rain, served as the earth’s first irrigation system. Scientists now confirm what the Bible has always known, that the earth is “founded upon the waters” (Psalm 136:6; 42:2).
Though there was no rain in Eden, Genesis 2:10 says that a river flowed from the garden and separated into four head waters – the Tigris, the Euphrates, the Pishon and the Gihon – and, from these four African rivers, watered the entire earth. Just as Genesis describes the life-giving water of Eden as springing up from the center of the earth to water the entire planet; Jesus describes the life He gives as springing up from the center of who He has made us to be, overflowing to the world where He has placed us. He says,
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38).
Eden is a picture of what our lives are meant to be in Christ- overflowing gardens of abundant life.
