The Only Thing That Counts
“… what counts is the new creation.”
Beloved of God:
We have spent the last seven weeks proclaiming the Word of God from Paul’s letter to the Galatians. As we have said throughout this series, Galatians is Paul’s declaration that salvation comes only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and has nothing to do with fulling the customs, codes and expectations of other human beings. As we come to this Resurrection Sunday, Paul closes his letter summing up his entire message with one sentence, “Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation” (Galatians 6:15).
For as much time as he spends preaching against submitting to cultural norms, Paul says in the end what matters is not whether something is a cultural norm or not, but whether it serves God’s New Creation. God is the Creator who is ever about the work of New Creation. The first verse of the Bible declares, “In the Beginning God created,” and the closing chapters of the Bible begin with God declaring, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5).
The Bible declares that everything that is, God made through Christ (John 1:3, Hebrews 1:2), and in Christ God makes all things new. “If anyone is in Christ,” 2 Corinthians 5:17, says “the new creation has come.” Life in Christ is not about being able to declare yourself right or wrong. Life in Christ is about experiencing the transformative power of God within our lives, and through our lives, serving God’s work of transformation within the world.
