Day 3: Friday, March 8, 2019
“3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age…”
Paul Lawrence Dunbar wrote:
We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
Read: Galatians 1:1-5
The poem goes on, but Dunbar’s opening lines so penetratingly pull back the veil on this “present evil age” where so many feel the need to hide the truth of their lives behind photo shopped social media posts that no more really needs to be said. His message is simple: you don’t have to hide, doing so is self-destructive, and living your truth is the most revolutionary and liberating act any of us can take.
It is the same message that Apostle Paul shouted to the world centuries early in his letter to the Galatians. Paul’s message? We find our truest selves not in the arbitrary, capricious and superficial expectations of other people, but in the inclusive, affirming and life giving grace of Jesus Christ.
Respond: Questions for Reflection and Discussion
- What do you see as the most popular “mask” worn by people in this day and time?
- Name the most destructive mask from which Christ has rescued you. What mask(s) might you still be wearing from which you need rescue?
