Who are “They” Anyway?
Day 7: Wednesday, March 13, 2019
“Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ…”
Scholars have long debated the identity of the group that came into the Galatian congregations seeking to impose their will. Paul simply calls them “some people,” and that may be description enough, because we all have to deal with “some people,” who seek undue influence in our lives.
The society we live in tries to govern us, direct us and even manipulate us by training us, from day one, to worry about what other people think. But if allowed, the forces of human conformity will govern us in almost every aspect of our lives.
They will tell us where to spend our time, who our friends should be, where we should work and who we should hang out with after work. They will tell us what to wear, what to do with our hair, what to eat and how much to eat. They will tell us where to go to church, when to go to church and how to worship once we get to church.
Who are they? And, why are they telling us how to run our lives? I’ll tell you why… because some people are telling them how to run their lives and misery loves company. Living our lives in obedience to God through faith in Jesus Christ begins when we free ourselves from living in conformity to other people’s expectations.
